Texas A&M’s future quarterback room will look very different for the first time under head coach Mike Elko, as current starting signal-caller Marcel Reed could depart for the 2027 NFL Draft after the 2026 season, while incoming freshman QB Helaman Casuga represents the future on paper, but nothing is guaranteed, especially with new offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins taking over as the primary play-caller.
In the 2027 recruiting class, Elko has already landed a commitment from blue-chip four-star quarterback Jayce Johnson, who continues to rise in the rankings and is currently positioned as 247Sports’ No. 7-ranked quarterback in the cycle. Possessing elite arm strength, Johnson needs to become a more fluid pocket passer, but so far, the Aggies could be looking at the program’s next star QB.

Already making several visits to College Station last year, inclement weather in Texas resulted in Elko and his staff having to cancel a packed junior days weekend, which was supposed to include Jayce Johnson, but after speaking with GigEm247 recruiting insider Joseph Hastings, the Georgia native has reportedly set an official visit with Texas A&M.
According to Hastings, Texas A&M’s first commit in the 2027 cycle will make his way back to campus during the start of the summer recruiting schedule on May 28-30, providing the A&M coaching staff a full weekend to further sell the program’s future from a development standpoint, already stating, “I’m in a really good place with Texas A&M right now.”
During his pre-game media appearance during the Under Armour All-American game last month, Johnson explained that while he is fully committed to Texas A&M, that won’t prevent him from taking separate visits heading into the summer.
“I’m locked in but I’ve still got my recruitment process open; you never know what can happen. My OC from Texas A&M just left, and that made me think about some things. But I’m still locked in with them; they’re family-oriented, and they are good people to be around who develop their players.”
According to 247Sports, Johnson is currently positioned as the 65th-ranked prospect in the 2027 class, and the 7th-ranked quarterback and player out of Georgia.
