The NCAA Tournament delivered once again in 2026, with Michigan coming out on top after a dominant run to the national championship. However, one controversial topic loomed in the background throughout the entire Big Dance: March Madness expansion.

Expansion had been on the horizon for a number of years now, but a move to 76 teams started to feel more and more likely as the 2025-26 season went on. Now, it looks like the tournament could be expanded as early as next season. The selection committee has a number of calls scheduled for Thursday to make a final decision on expansion, and a solution could be reached then, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
The tournament has been at 68 teams since 2011, when it expanded from 65 teams and added three more “play-in” games, making up what is now the First Four between the bottom four at-large teams and the bottom four automatic bids.
A 76-team tournament would look largely the same for the top teams, but rhetorical First Four would be expanded to a much larger group of bubble teams. Instead of four play-in games on the first Tuesday and Wednesday of the tournament, there would be a total of 12 play-in games played at two different sites. Dayton, OH, the site of the First Four since 2011, is expected to remain one of the sites.
Critics of tournament expansion cite a bubble that already often rewards teams that lose a lot of games in conference play, specifically from the Power Four conferences. In 2025-26, the bubble was very weak and already let in some teams that many fans didn’t deem worthy of a bid, and that problem isn’t getting any better with more teams.

Teams that would have benefited from a 76-team tournament in 2026 are teams such as Oklahoma, Auburn, Indiana and others.
Regardless, it looks like this polarizing change is nearing its inclusion in college basketball. The NCAA will make a final decision on expansion very soon.
