The Indiana Fever did not make their decision on Caitlin Clark’s final injury status until a few hours before tipoff. It appears that the team was holding out hope that the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year would be able to recover in time for the Commissioner’s Cup championship game against the Minnesota Lynx.

This was not the case. The Fever ultimately decided to play it safe with their cornerstone superstar and have her sit out her third straight game due to a lingering groin injury.

Indiana will now head into the winner-take-all clash undermanned and without their best player available.

Fever head coach Stephanie White spoke to reporters late Tuesday morning during the team’s shootaround. At that point, the team had not made an official decision on Clark’s playing status yet. However, it appears that White already had a good sense of where they were leaning toward.

“Again, I think the most important thing for us is big picture,” White said, via Brian Haenchen of IndyStar. “There is no sense in rushing anything, so we’ll get her evaluated by the training staff and go from there.”

Tuesday is without a doubt Indiana’s biggest game of the season thus far, and they would have certainly preferred to have Clark suit up for this one. However, as White said, they are more concerned with the big picture and are unwilling to risk further injury for their star guard.

Clark’s next chance to play would be on Thursday in a home game against the Las Vegas Aces.
