The Michigan Wolverines were known as Wide Receiver U in some circles during the 1990s with Desmond Howard winning the Heisman Trophy in 1991 and several players following in his footsteps to become college or NFL stars.

The Wolverines’ receiving room wasn’t quite the same last season with Roman Wilson off to the NFL and quarterback play a season-long question mark, but the arrival of five-star QB Bryce Underwood has fans hoping for a passing game resurgence.
Recently, the Wolverines’ standing with a five-star wide receiver was given a major update as Michigan was named among his top three university choices with just days left until his decision.

Mami (FL) Northwestern High School five-star Calvin Russell Jr. announced that he has included the Wolverines among his top three schools along with the Oregon Ducks and Florida State Seminoles.

The dynamic 6-foot-5 and a half inch tall, 190 pound receiver could give Michigan football a deep threat the likes of which they haven’t seen since Wilson headed to the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers.
The dual-sport (football and basketball) athlete’s announcement date is scheduled for July 5, 2025 and could be the biggest yet for coach Sherrone Moore’s Class of 2026.
Michigan’s 2026 class has surged into the top 10 in recent days with positive announcements from five-star defensive end Carter Meadows and four-star defensive end Julian Walker.
The addition of Russell Jr. could vault the Wolverines into the top five, and give Bryce Underwood a new favorite receiving target in the process.
