The UFC, once a sport few networks wanted to televise, has grown into one of the most popular and talked-about sports worldwide. While CEO Dana White has played a huge role in this growth, the fighters themselves have been the true driving force behind its rise.
One of the biggest names is Irish legend Conor McGregor. Whether you love him or hate him, McGregor’s time in the UFC was monumental for the sport’s popularity. He was a fighter everyone tuned in to watch—whether inside the Octagon or holding the mic at a press conference.
That said, McGregor, now 36, hasn’t fought since 2021. While no clear signs of a comeback have emerged, he made it clear—following President Donald Trump’s announcement of a UFC event at the White House—that he would be open to returning for what would be a historic, first-of-its-kind occasion.
“Happy 4th of July, USA. Excited with President Trump announcing a UFC fight event at the White House,” McGregor wrote. “I would be honored! Count me in!”
He later shared a photo showing a text exchange with Dana White about the possibility of returning to fight at the White House. White responded enthusiastically, “I LOVE IT!!”

Donald Trump, a longtime UFC fan and someone UFC President Dana White credits for helping bring the sport into the spotlight when few others would, made a major announcement during a July 4th address on Thursday.
“Every one of our national parks, battlefields and historic sites are going to have special events in honor of ‘America250,’ and I even think we’re going to have a UFC fight,” President Trump said. “We’re going to build a little — we’re not, Dana is going to do it. Dana is great, one of a kind — going to be a UFC fight, championship fight, full fight, like 20,000 to 25,000 people, and we’re going to do that as part of ‘250’ also.”
A UFC fight at the White House would be historic on its own, but having Conor McGregor — one of the biggest icons in the sport’s history — return to the Octagon for the event in front of 20,000 to 25,000 fans after nearly five years away from MMA could make it one of the most watched events in recent memory.
