Virginia Tech football: Who does Brent Pry think Frank Beamer will be rooting for in Week 1?

by

The Virginia Tech Hokies kick off the 2025 college football season next month. We are that close to real football. The Hokies begin the season in Atlanta against the South Carolina Gamecocks. South Carolina is led by someone Virginia Tech fans know well: Shane Beamer.

Yes, that’s the same Shane Beamer who grew up in Blacksburg, attended Blacksburg High School, played football, graduated from Virginia Tech, and spent time on the coaching staff. Most importantly, Shane is the son of the man who put Virginia Tech football on the map: Frank Beamer.

Current Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry has an excellent relationship with the elder Beamer. Pry was a graduate assistant on Beamer’s staff in the 1990s, and Beamer and Bud Foster advocated for Pry to land the Hokies’ head coaching job a few years ago.

So, this begs the question: Who will Frank Beamer be rooting for next month?

At this week’s ACC Kickoff in Charlotte, Pry was asked that question.

“You know, obviously, he loves his son first,” Pry answered with a laugh. “He loves Virginia Tech an awful lot, but he loves his son first. I think if you asked Frank’s wife, she’d be like, ‘My son is where it’s at, are you kidding me?’

Pry said he asked Frank recently about the game, and he responded, “I just want both teams to play really well.”

That will be a tough day for the legendary Beamer. He can’t lose either way. The Gamecocks are the overwhelming favorite. They have a Heisman contender at quarterback. Can the Hokies surprise us all and begin the new season in a big way?
