Indiana is taking on the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday evening. The Fever, once again playing without Caitlin Clark due to an injury, are looking to move three games above .500. Indiana is 14-12 on the year heading into Wednesday night’s game against the 16-9 Mercury.

Wednesday night, a couple of minutes into the WNBA regular season game, the Indiana Fever crowd immediately booed an opposing player who had just checked into the game.

DeWanna Bonner, 37, opened the 2025 season with the Fever. The two-time WNBA champion and six-time All-Star signed a one-year contract with the Fever in February. She was expected to be a key veteran presence for a Caitlin Clark-led team seeking a championship.

But things didn’t work out for Bonner in Indianapolis.

Starting in mid-June, Bonner was listed as out for games due to “personal reasons.” According to reports, Bonner had “no interest in returning to play for the Fever.” Within days, she was released by the team.

Bonner admitted that she “felt the fit did not work out” in Indianapolis. She preferred to land elsewhere. And she did, signing with the Phoenix Mercury on July 8.

Wednesday night, Bonner made her return to the Indianapolis Fever. She checked into Wednesday night’s game with 7:00 remaining in the first quarter. Bonner was immediately booed by the Fever’s home crowd upon entering the game.

“DeWanna Bonner checks in, is immediately boo’d by Fever fans,” Scott Agness, covering the game, shared on X.

“Was part of Indiana for just nine games. Her partner, Alyssa Thomas, gestures to fans to keep bringing it.”

It would be “weird” if she wasn’t booed by the Fever crowd

You don’t have to love the booing, but you have to admit, it would be weird if the crowd didn’t boo.

Booing is a part of sports. Bonner played for the Fever for just nine games. She was brought to Indianapolis to be a veteran impact player. She left without making a positive impact.

Of course the Fever crowd is going to boo.

“Booing ain’t my thing. But what would be weird is if Fever fans DIDN’T boo DeWanna Bonner,” Robin Lundberg, an avid WNBA expert, shared on X.

One fan added: “Boo deserved in this case.”

“This is definitely earned. It’s sports,” another fan wrote.

“We expected DeWanna Bonner to get booed. It isn’t racism, it’s basketball. She quit the team,” one fan added.
