Texas Tech basketball adds pair of coaches to Grant McCasland’s staff

Grant McCasland has added a pair of coaches to the Texas Tech basketball staff for the 2025-26 season.

Tech announced the hirings of assistant coach Rem Bakamus and associate director of operations Duncan Bacon on Friday. Bacon worked as a graduate assistant for Texas Tech during last year’s run to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

Bakamus joins McCasland’s staff after spending last season as the director of player development for Big 12 rival Arizona. He began his coaching career at Baylor, where he worked as a graduate assistant during the Bears’ run to the national championship in 2021.

Prior to his coaching career, Bakamus played at Gonzaga from 2012-17 and was part of the Bulldogs’ appearance in the 2017 national championship game, where they fell to North Carolina. He graduated from Gonzaga in 2017 with degrees in sports management and public relations and earned his graduate degree in sports pedagogy from Baylor. His dad Bill is a hall of fame high school coach in the state of Washington.

Bacon was initially hired as the director of operations at Stephen F. Austin in April, planning to follow Matt Braeuer to Nacogdoches after the Tech assistant was hired as head coach. Instead, the Abilene Christian University graduate will return to Lubbock in an expanded role.

McCasland lost a pair of assistants this offseason with Braeuer earning a head coaching position at SFA. After the season, Luke Barnwell left to join Ben McCollum’s staff at Iowa. McCasland said in June he wanted to find assistants that would complement the rest of the staff, including returners Jeff Linder and Achoki Moikobu.
