The Florida Gators are heading into the college football season with high expectations, riding the success of quarterback DJ Lagway.

Lagway is entering his second season at Florida after taking over as the No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart last season.

While he dealt with injuries last season and has been seen nursing several setbacks during the offseason, all eyes are on Lagway to make a major leap at Florida.

Ahead of the 2025 college football season, the Gators quarterback was listed on the Walter Camp Player of the Year Preseason Watch List.

Florida shared the announcement on social media, revealing their reaction to the news.

“Prestigious 2,” posted the official social media account of the Florida Gators football team. “@DerekLagway has been named to the @WalterCampFF Player of the Year Preseason Watch List.”

In his first season with the Florida Gators, DJ Lagway posted 12 touchdowns and 1,915 yards while completing 59.9% of his pass attempts.

Lagway took over the starting quarterback role for Graham Mertz, who was playing in the latter end of his college football career at Florida.

Mertz, who finished his final season in college with a torn ACL, capped off the season with six touchdowns and 791 yards, posting a 76.6 completion percentage.

Several other college football stars were named on the Walter Camp Player of the Year Preseason Watch List, including Texas quarterback Arch Manning, Penn State quarterback Drew Allar, Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams.
