Former Clemson football assistant lands SEC coaching job

Former Clemson football offensive coordinator Garrett Riley has found a new home, and it’s in the SEC.

Riley will join the Missouri Tigers as an offensive assistant, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. Riley recently wrapped up a three-year run as Clemson‘s offensive coordinator. He was fired on Dec. 29, two days after the Tigers’ season ended with a woeful 22-10 loss to Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Penn State held Clemson to just 236 yards in the loss, which dropped the Tigers to 7-6 overall and made Riley’s firing inevitable.

Dabo Swinney first tapped Riley to be Clemson’s offensive coordinator in January 2013 after Riley had guided TCU to the national championship game against the Georgia Bulldogs. The younger brother of USC coach Lincoln Riley, Garrett Riley was the Broyles Award winner as the top assistant coach in the nation in 2022.

In his final season at Clemson, the Tigers placed seventh in the ACC in total offense (392.2 yards per game) and 10th in scoring offense (27.2). Swinney brought back former offensive coordinator Chad Morris to replace Riley. Morris’ hire was made official on Monday.
