Texas A&M drops two spots in final USA TODAY Sports CFB Re-Rank

by

Texas A&M’s 2025 football season ended at the hands of national runner-up Miami (FL) in the first round of the College Football Playoff, as the Hurricanes fell to Indiana 27-21 in the National Championship Game on Monday night, while head coach Mike Elko and his staff quickly secured 17 commitments from the transfer portal in just one week’s time.

Still, competing for a national title is the sole goal for every Power Four program, and while making it to the CFP for the first time in program history is certainly an accomplishment, Elko knows is ahead of curve as usual, and has assembled a roster that, on its face, should compete for a spot in the CFP next season, and has already improved several areas that lacked talent/depth in 2025.

It’s very early, so reflecting on the 2025 campaign is still appropriate, especially knowing that the Aggies were the only team to prevent Miami, which was just several plays away from winning it all on Monday night, from scoring more than ten points, and had every opportunity to defeat the Hurricanes if a couple of throws had gone Marcel Reed’s way.

After being ranked No. 8 in both the final AP and US LBM Coaches Poll on Tuesday, it’s clear that the voters felt that Texas A&M’s close loss to Miami proved that the Aggies were one of the best teams in the country, and could have gon much farther if the external and internal issues hadn’t occurred that Saturday afternoon.

Similar to both rankings, the final USA TODAY College Football Re-Rank saw the Aggies drop just two spots to No. 8, a ranking that has become very popular, while Oregon, Georgia, and Texas Tech all dropped three spots after losing in the CFP.

Texas A&M enters the 2026 offseason with plenty of hype after rebuilding the roster through the transfer portal, paired with several key returns on both sides of the ball. Still, we’ve been down this road before, so all we can do is wait till the Aggies hit the field next fall.
