Former TCU coach Gary Patterson now on other side of Alamo Bowl

by

On Friday, USC officially hired Gary Patterson as its new defensive coordinator. The legendary TCU head coach will take over the Trojans’ defense following the departure of D’Anton Lynn for Penn State.

While Patterson seems excited to get to work at USC, a rather unfortunate tweet of his did recently emerge. Following USC’s Alamo Bowl loss to TCU—a school that he was the head coach at for more than two decades—last month, Patterson took to social media to celebrate his former team.

“Great job fighting back, Frogs win!” Patterson wrote.

Obviously, Patterson was not yet employed by USC at the time, so there was nothing wrong with him saying what he did. However, it is a bit ironic to see the Trojans’ new defensive coordinator celebrating what was a rather unfortunate USC collapse.

Ultimately, the best way for Patterson to win himself over to the Trojan family will be with the USC defense’s performance on the field. Not allowing 35-yard touchdowns on screen passes on 3rd and 20 would be a great way to start.
