Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has landed ten commitments in the 2027 recruiting class, including four-star quarterback Jayce Johnson, who, despite being one of the program’s “hard” commits, will likely take several visits this summer as his profile continues to rise, which has led the new coaching staff to take a home visit on Sunday night.
Texas A&M’s quarterback future is shaky, as redshirt junior Marcel Reed will return under center next season, but nothing guaranteed in 2027, while incoming freshman Helaman Casuga likely won’t be ready to contend for the starting job, forcing Mike Elko to land a veteran quarterback from the transfer portal, while hoping that Jayce Johnson will be on the roster to develop, and likely compete with Casuga over the next three seasons.

After offensive coordinator Collin Klein departed to become Kansas State’s new head coach, wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins has taken over as the team’s new OC, and given that Klein also served as the quarterbacks coach, Elko elevated Joey Lynch to said role, as both new coaches made the trip to Georgia to visit the blue-chip commit.
While Johnson was scheduled to visit College Station on Saturday, the inclement weather in Texas resulted in the in-home visit, and earlier this month, before the Under Armour All-American took place, Johnson provided a quote regarding his current standing with the Aggies amid the increasing attention from Georgia, Florida, Auburn, and Tennessee.
“I’m locked in but I’ve still got my recruitment process open; you never know what can happen. My OC from Texas A&M just left, and that made me think about some things. But I’m still locked in with them; they’re family-oriented, and they are good people to be around who develop their players.”
According to On3, Jayce Johnson is currently ranked 62nd overall, 5th among quarterbacks, and 7th in Georgia.
