Success is measured differently by just about everyone. Some people use wealth or status as markers; for others, it’s health or family; and for still others, it’s if your team beats your biggest rival in their stadium on the day their coach is celebrating his retirement. The point is: people have varying opinions on what success looks like.
This certainly translates to this year’s UNC basketball team. For some Tar Heel fans, anything short of playing for a national championship isn’t a successful season. Given the up and down nature of the program the past six to seven years, others probably just want to see improvement from last year’s (relative to UNC’s history) poor showing. Other fans will have a checklist: did they win the ACC? A top four NCAA tournament seed? Play beyond (or even in) the first weekend of the NCAA tournament?

That’s what today’s Tar Heel Blog Question of the Day is: What outcome will make you feel as though this season is a success?
At the beginning of the season, I predicted the Heels to finish fifth in the ACC and earn a six seed in the NCAA tournament. Currently, UNC is fifth in the ACC and projected to be a six seed in the NCAA tournament (I also predicted the Carolina to beat Michigan State and lose to Georgia Tech, so there’s that). I feel like this and a Sweet 16 appearance would be the bare minimum needed for me personally to consider the season a success. Caleb Wilson is producing one of the best freshman seasons in UNC history, Veesaar has become an anchor in the paint, and the rest of the roster is talented enough to potentially push for more. A win against Duke would go a long way towards making this season feel like one worth celebrating as well.
So, let us know in the comments: what needs to happen for you to consider this UNC basketball season a success?
