ZEELAND – Zeeland West defensive coordinator Gregg Hoogland has been one of the top high school football assistant coaches for years, helping the Dux to five state championships.
The fifth helped him earn some statewide and even national recognition.

Hoogland won the Broyles Award for Michigan as the top assistant coach in the state for 2024.
“It means a lot of hard work has paid off, I suppose. It means that I have had really great players who done what I have asked them to do, and that I have worked for a tremendous head coach in John (Shillito) and now Jeff (Bolhouse). Our success has a lot to do with it,” Hoogland said.

Hoogland led the Dux defense to allow just 234 points in 14 games (16.7 ppg), only giving up more than 21 points three times all season.
He was honored with award winners from 37 states in Arkansas last week.

“It was a two-day event. There were 33 coaches of the 37 states that have winners there. It was really different because usually, you go to a coaching clinic and you know everybody, but here everybody is from a different state,” he said. “Thursday night is the college award with a huge banquet. Then Friday, it is at a resort called Oaklawn. There is a horse track there and during the day, they take everyone to the track. That was really neat. Then Friday nigh was the high school awards.”
Zeeland West football defensive coordinator Gregg Hoogland won the Broyles Award for the state of Michigan.
It was good exposure for the Dux program, which has been one of the state’s best.
“An incredible accomplishment for our defensive coordinator and proud moment for our football program, athletic department and school,” Zeeland West Athletics posted on Facebook. “We knew he was great, but it’s nice to know everyone does, too.”
