BATON ROUGE – All eyes were on Baton Rouge for LSU women’s basketball’s showdown with South Carolina last Saturday night.
Both teams traded the lead a number of times but ultimately it was Dawn Staley and the No. 3 Gamecocks that survived Kim Mulkey and the No. 7 Tigers, 79-72, in the top-10 Southeastern Conference clash.

LSU (22-4, 8-4 SEC) went down to the wire with South Carolina (25-2, 11-1), something only a few teams can say they’ve done this season. Would a close loss mean that the Tigers fall in this week’s rankings? Despite the competitive game, LSU did drop one spot in the latest USA TODAY Coaches Poll from No. 6 to No. 7.

Michigan (22-4) leapfrogged both LSU and Vanderbilt up to the top 5 after Vanderbilt was upset on the road Sunday at No. 25 Georgia.
This week, the Tigers travel to No. 17 Ole Miss (20-6) for another big game on the road before returning home to host Missouri (16-11, 4-8).
