About an hour following the decommitment of 2027 four-star quarterback Peter Bourque, Kyle Whittingham and his staff sent out their first official offer at the quarterback position since being in Ann Arbor — 2027 four-star Kamden Lopati.
Lopati (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) is from Salt Lake City, Utah and is currently committed to play for Illinois; he announced that commitment last July just a couple months after decommitting from Washington. But since then, his recruiting stock has significantly increased, earning offers recently not only from Michigan, but also from Notre Dame, Duke, Michigan State, Tennessee and others.

Prior to the recruiting dead period, new offensive coordinator Jason Beck and quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. went out to Utah to visit with Lopati, making their interest in him crystal clear. It was really only a matter of time before they made this offer official.
Recruiting expert Greg Biggins scouted Lopati in June 2025 and wrote this about him:
Lopati is one of the top quarterbacks in the national ’27 class. He has a linebacker build but is all quarterback and one of the best pure throwers in the region. For his size, he moves well and shows some real dual-threat ability. Threw for over 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns as a sophomore with just four interceptions and does a nice job protecting the football, while still taking his shots in the vertical passing game. Moves well in the pocket and shows the quickness to get outside and elude the rush and throws very well on the run. He’s a zone read threat and had over 600 rushing yards last season and is tough to bring down in the open field because of his size and strength. His arm talent is what jumps out and what separates him. He can throw the deeper outs and posts on a rope and the ball jumps out of his hand. Want to see him continue to improve his ability to process the game and be quicker with his reads but with two more years to develop, it’s exciting to see where his game will be at by the time he’s ready for college.

Lopati — who apparently goes by “The Cowboy” — is ranked No. 3 in the state of Utah, No. 12 at the quarterback position and No. 149 overall, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. As a junior this past season, he completed 114-of-76 passes for 2,671 yards, 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also ran 90 times for 730 yards and 10 touchdowns.
