ACC Championships, Day 2 Finals: NC State Sprints to 200 Free Conference Record

Wednesday is the sprinters’ day at the ACC Championships, with the 50 freestyle and the 200 free relay. NC State is taking full advantage.

Quintin McCarty set the meet record in prelims in the 50, then split 18.19 to lead NC State to a conference record in the night finals to kick off the session. The Wolfpack went 1:14.02, erasing the conference mark set in 2025 by California. The Wolfpack won all four events on the night, helping to erase the point deficit from a disqualification in the 200 medley relay on Tuesday.

The action from the second night of the meet.

Women’s 200 freestyle relay

Virginia gave a heck of a run at one of the school’s hallowed relay records. Bryn Greenwaldt, Claire Curzan, Anna Moesch and Sara Curtis went 123.75 to win the relay by more than a second. That is a scant .12 seconds off the Meet, Conference, and NCAA record set by a bunch of girls named Walsh in 2024. Curtis was a staggering 20.46 off the end. It also is a McAuley Center pool record.

Second was Standford in 1:25.14. Louisville was third, two tenths behind, and NC State was fourth. Cal and Duke added NCAA cuts

Men’s 200 freestyle relay

A night after a DQ in the 200 medley relay denied the Wolfpack a possible win, NC State made amends, with very safe starts, to boot. The Wolfpack went 1:14.02 with the team of Jerry Fox, Quintin McCarty, Drew Salls and Kaii Winkler.

That unseats the meet mark of 1:14.29 that NC State set last year. Cal’s team at NCAAs went 1:14.12. (It’s also under the American record that NC State owns, but German international Winkler obviates that.) And it downs the 1:14.11 pool mark set in 2022 by Florida.

Cal was second in 1:14.81, with an 18.38 from Evan Petty in there. Louisville was third in 1:14.91, followed by Virginia Tech in 1:15.00. Stanford, Florida State, Virginia and Notre Dame also had A cuts.

Women’s 500 freestyle

Katie Grimes is the marshal of the Virginia distance parade, winning the 500 free in 4:33.78. She led teammates Aimee Canny (4:34.46), Cavan Gormsen (4:34.99) and Madi Mintenko (4:36.91) to all but erase the edge that Stanford and Cal built for itself in diving. Bailey Hartman’s sixth-place finish helped, too.

Claire Weinstein of Cal was fifth in 4:37.17, though she was a tenth slower than the time that teammate Ella Crosgrove used to win the B final.

Men’s 500 freestyle

Max Carlsen pulled maybe a wee bit of an upset in the 500, after finishing third in prelims and having been the second seed entering, though perhaps not as touted as the others. The top seed was Ethan Ekk, while Ryan Erisman brought it in prelims at 4:11.17.

But Carlsen was the star at night, the freshman going 4:09.44 for the Wolfpack, putting a scare into Lucas Henveaux’s conference record from last year by six tenths. Ekk was second in 4:11.07. Erisman was slower than prelims to finish third in 4:11.50. Teammate Eduardo Moares grabbed fourth and Nathan Wiffen fifth for the Golden Bears, who move to the lead ahead of Stanford in the team competition, with NC State, still stung by the relay DQ, in ninth.
