Injury news

Ian Jackson (ankle) will miss Saturday’s game and he is currently in a walking boot. He suffered the injury in the first half of Wednesday night’s game against Creighton.

What to watch for

  • Pick Dix: Creighton leading scorer Josh Dix was held to only 7 points on 3-of-9 shooting the last time he met St. John’s, but he’s picked up his play over the last four games. In this stretch, Dix is averaging 16.0 points and 5.0 rebounds on 50% shooting, 45.8% from three (11-of-24), and is a perfect 7-of-7 from the line. Against UConn, he scored a team-high 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 3-of-4 from three to upset the Huskies on the road. Can he keep it rolling against the Red Storm?

  • [Bill Murray voice] Well, It’s Johnnies Day, Again: Since St. John’s started promoting one home game every February for their school pride event known as “Johnnies Day” in 2023, the Red Storm are undefeated. They won their last two Johnnies Day games against Creighton, who were ranked each time. The lone returning Johnny to enter the scoring column in last year’s Johnnies Day was Zuby Ejiofor, who posted 18 points, nine rebounds, and five assists in a 79-73 win. He’s likely to log a similar stat line on Saturday, as he leads St. John’s in points per game (16.0), rebounds per game (7.3), and assists per game (3.5).

  • The Garden of Not-So-Three-den: There’s a very peculiar shooting discrepancy unfolding for St. John’s. When they play in road and neutral games, they shoot 37.8% from three, which would rank in the 92nd percentile among Division I teams over a full season. However, when they play in the supposedly friendly confines of Madison Square Garden, they shoot 28.5% from three, which would put them in the 3rd percentile among Division I teams. Without their second-best three-point shooter in Ian Jackson, who averages 36% from deep on 4.3 attempts per game, how will the Red Storm overcome their shooting yips inside the Mecca?

  • Ahead of this Saturday’s bracket preview, national college basketball media members trekked to Indianapolis and made their own mock bracket. St. John’s was picked as a 5-seed in the Midwest region and would face 4-seed Stephen F. Austin in the first round and potentially in the second round: Oh, oh no, not again…
