Conor McGregor stirred the pot recently, hinting he had a fight lined up against a “no name” welterweight. The internet went crazy with speculations, and some landed on Carlos Prates. However, the Brazilian claims that’s untrue.
On Tuesday, Prates (23-7 MMA, 6-1 UFC) took to social media to address the growing rumors of a mega clash between him and McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) – former two-division UFC champion and MMA’s biggest star. Although he like the idea and he’d be all for it, he doesn’t see any sense in making the matchup, as Prates sees it as uneven fight that would end poorly for the Irishman.

“A lot of you guys have been asking me about the Conor McGregor fight and I didn’t get anything from the UFC, yet,” Prates said in a video post. “I’m really happy wih youguys saying my name. Of course, it would be a huge honor for me to fight against him. I really want the fight that will bring me the title shot: JDM, Conor McGregor.
“To be honest, I think that fight is hard to happen because Conor McCgregor is five years without any fight, he retired from MMA. After five years, he would’nt fight the most entertaining welterweight in the world. Nothing against him. Everybody knows, I know, he knows I would hurt him bad. I would knock him out. I don’t think it’s the right way for him to make a comeback for a huge super star like him. But if he wants to fight I’m herem. I’m ready.”
Prates, a top contender in the UFC’s welterweight divsion, is on a two-fight winning streak since suffering his firts UFC loss to Ian Machado Garry in 2025. In this latest streak, Prates has viciously knocked out Geoff Neal and ex-UFC welterweight champ Leon Edwards. He earned Performane of the Night for both finishes. Prates awaits for his first fight of 2026. His last bout, which was against Edwards, went down in November at UFC 322.

On the other hand, McGregor, 37, has not fought since a July 2021 loss to Dustin Poirier. McGregor broke his leg in the fight and required surgery. He built his way back physically but has yet to make a return to competition. He did came close in 2024 with a showdown against former Bellator champion Michael Chandler. However, McGregor suffered a broken toe ahead of that bout and was forced to withdraw. He’s yet to be booked for a fight since.
