Michigan Loads Up With Top Seeds

The 2026 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued with the Day 2 prelims on Thursday, Feb. 26, in Madison, Wisconsin.

The events on the docket are the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

Here is a look at what happened on Thursday morning:

Big Ten Men’s 100 Butterfly

Michigan senior Tyler Ray was one hundredth of a second off of his Big Ten meet record set last year in the event. He got to the wall in 44.29.

Ohio State sophomore Matthew Klinge was about three tenths of a second behind at 44.61 with Northwestern junior Stuart Seymour getting to the wall in 44.66.

USC junior Michel Chmielewski took the fourth seed in 44.85, followed by Minnesota sophomore Jacob Johnson (44.86) and Indiana senior Owen McDonald (44.86), who tied for the fifth seed.

Michigan’s Ole Eideam (44.94) and Colin Geer (45.17) rounded out the finalists.

Big Ten Men’s 400 IM

The Wolverines grabbed another top seed as sophomore Lorne Wigginton got to the wall in 3:36.46 in the 400 IM.

A half second back was Indiana freshman Josh Bey (3:36.92), the only other swimmer sub 3:38.

The third seed went to Ohio State senior Tristan Jankovics in 3:38.15, followed by Northwestern sophomore Joshua Staples (3:40.65), Wisconsin senior Dominik Mark Torok (3:41.24), Michigan junior Ryan Healy (3:41.40), Indiana freshman Noah Cakir (3:41.61) and Ohio State senior Mason Edmund (3:41.80).

Big Ten Men’s 200 Freestyle

Wisconsin freshman Enzo Solitario gave the hometown fans an exciting finish. He got to the wall in 1:32.09 to take the top seed in the 200 free.

Ohio State senior Tomas Navikonis was just behind in 1:32.24, followed by Indiana junior Aaron Shackell (1:32.57) and Michigan senior Eitan Ben-Shitrit (1:32.59).

USC sophomore Oliver Sogaard-Andersen took the fifth seed in 1:32.63, followed by Wisconsin junior Luukas Vainio (1:32.64), Michigan freshman Antoine Sauve (1:32.68) and Ohio State sophomore Jordi Vilchez (1:32.68).

Big Ten Men’s 100 Breaststroke

It was back to Michigan with another top seed as freshman Luka Mladenovic was a half second ahead of the field in the 100 breast, getting to the wall in 50.95.

Meanwhile Indiana put four in the finals, which will be a big boost for the Hoosiers.

Penn State senior Mario Lazzerini took the second spot at 51.32, just ahead of Indiana sophomores Alexei Avakov (51.38) and Travis Gulledge (51.41).

Wisconsin fifth-year Ben Wiegand claimed the fifth seed in 51.77, ahead of Indiana juniors Toby Barnett (51.84) and Dylan Smiley (52.04) and Wisconsin freshman Drew Gaerthofner (52.10).
