Badminton Asia Team Championships: Indian women to face China, men to take on Korea in quarterfinals

Defending champion India will take on China in the women’s quarterfinals, while the men’s team will face Korea in the last-eight stage of the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Qingdao, China on Thursday.

Having secured a quarterfinal spot with a match to spare, the Indian men rested Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth against Japan but still pushed the tie to the wire before losing 2-3, finishing second in Group C. The women’s team also went down 2-3 against Thailand.

In the men’s tie, Ayush Shetty gave India an early lead with a 21-18, 15-21, 21-11 win over Kenta Nishimoto, before Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty doubled the advantage by beating Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi 21-18, 15-21, 21-12. Japan then fought back as HS Prannoy lost 17-21, 11-21 to Yushi Tanaka, with the Japanese taking the second doubles and third singles to seal the group top spot.

Earlier, the Indian women’s team failed to build on wins from Tanvi Sharma and the doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand.

Treesa and Gayatri beat Thailand’s Tidapron Kleebyeesun and Nattamon Laisuan 21-14, 20-22, 21-11 to hand India a 2-0 lead.

Tanvi, playing first singles in the absence of former world champion P.V. Sindhu, showed why she is regarded as the future of Indian badminton. After dropping a tight second game, she held her nerve to beat world No. 16 Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-14, 17-21, 21-18 in 63 minutes.

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand then extended India’s lead, beating Tidapron Kleebyeesun and Nattamon Laisuan 21-14, 20-22, 21-11 to make it 2-0. However, Rakshitha Sree and Malvika Bansod lost their singles matches, and the scratch pairing of Tanisha Crasto and Shruti Mishra went down 21-19, 14-21, 15-21 to Hathaithip Mijad and Napapakorn Tungkasatan in the second doubles.
