Updated SEC standings after Texas A&M’s 76-70 loss to Texas

by

Texas A&M (19-10, 9-7 SEC) did not help itself in terms of making the NCAA Tournament on Saturday after losing to Texas 76-70 inside a packed Reed Arena. Primarily due to rare poor shooting performance, finishing 38% from the field, and hitting just two three-pointers, only senior Rashaun Agee (22 points) and senior guard Marcus Hill (17 points) looked the part.

Only down one spot in ESPN Bracketologist Joe Lunardi’s updated tournament bracket, the Aggies still have everything in front of them, but will need to defeat Kentucky at home and LSU on the road before heading to Nashville for the SEC Tournament. Even before Saturday’s loss, Texas A&M needed two more victories to control its own destiny, so the postseason path is still intact.

Around the rest of the SEC, Florida has now won nine in a row after blowing out Arkansas at home, while Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, and Georgia all helped their chances of earning an at-large bid to the tournament, while Auburn’s home loss to Ole Miss could result in the Tigers being pushed off to the periphery of NCAA Tournament contention.

For the Aggies, late-season fatigue and a lack of production from the rest of the roster, outside of Rashaun Agee and Marcus Hill, have been a consistent issue, while reserve forward Zach Clemence has certainly had his impressive moments, including his career high 29 points against Arkansas on Wednesday, but was a non-factor against Texas with just 3 points.

If the Aggies can get more from their bench and, most importantly, better performances from sophomore guard Ruben Dominguez, maybe, just maybe, Texas A&M can finish the regular season on a positive note.

Before hosting Kentucky on Tuesday night, here are the updated SEC basketball standings.
