ESPN ranks a Nebraska quarterback one of top QBs of the 2000s

A new list from ESPN ranking college football’s top 100 quarterbacks of the 2000s has been released, and let’s say it’s… interesting. ESPN Staff Writer Bill Connelly put together the list, and one Husker quarterback made the cut.

Former Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch was listed at No. 52, just ahead of No. 53 Brady Quinn (Notre Dame) and behind No. 51 Byron Leftwich (Marshall).

Crouch played at Nebraska from 1997 to 2001. In 43 games, he ran for 3,434 yards and 59 touchdowns while throwing for 4,481 yards and 29 touchdowns with 25 interceptions.

The Nebraska native also won the 2001 Heisman Trophy over Florida’s Rex Grossman, Miami’s Ken Dorsey, and Oregon’s Joey Harrington. That season, he ran for 1,115 yards and 18 touchdowns while throwing for 1,510 yards, seven touchdowns, and ten interceptions.

Connelly made his case for Nebraska’s last Heisman winner on the list.

The last great Nebraska option QB, Crouch, didn’t produce the stats we’ve grown accustomed to seeing from Heisman winners. But he was a scary, scary man with the ball in his hands. Just ask Missouri.

While other running quarterbacks are ranked higher, Crouch is the highest-ranked option quarterback. With modern offenses and current trends in the sport, it’s unlikely we’ll see a quarterback with his numbers win the Heisman or play in that style of offense again
