Kansas Jayhawk News

Well, that happened. Thought about doing the bit where I just pretend that last night didn’t happen but with Self getting tossed and the outcome, we may as well look at the reactions.

Fox Sports has a little video that may be worth checking out here.

And here’s the recap from Fox Sports:

Arizona State jumped on Kansas early, withstood a big run and made the key plays down the stretch to beat the Jayhawks (21-9, 11-6) for the third time in the Hurley era, with the others 2018 and ’19.

Darryn Peterson scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half as the Jayhawks twice rallied from double-digit deficits. Kansas went on a 17-1 run to cut a 20-point halftime deficit to four and trimmed a 12-point deficit to two with four minutes left.

Sports Illustrated shares how social media reacted when HCBS was ejected.

While Kansas had the ball, Peterson tried running the baseline to get open. He got caught up with an Arizona State defender, but despite having his ability to move prohibted, Peterson was the one called for a foul.

Joshua Schulman, also at SI, shares his 3 observations from last night’s game.

Here are three of our instant takeaways from the awful defeat (though we could probably provide 50 more).

With the last post on last night’s game, Dillon Davis wonders if this is a sign that we should temper our expectations for March once again.

What’s even more concerning than KU’s potential unfavorable placement in the bracket, is the fact that they all of a sudden look like a lost team destined for an early exit, a fate their predecessors suffered each of the past three seasons.

The offense can’t find its rhythm since Peterson has returned to the lineup full time, they have no reliable contributions off the bench except for the occasional 3-pointer from Jamari McDowell, and they often get outworked on the glass.

The Lady Jayhawks will open the Big 12 Tournament against UCF. The Jayhawks have fought to get to an 8-10 record in conference play after starting 1-6.

“I was in the office all day yesterday (Sunday) because it was really unclear as to who we were going to play and there were a lot of different scenarios,” Schneider said on his radio show “Hawk Talk” on Monday. “I had the TV on one game, the computer on one game and the iPad on another, just kind of trying to watch all those games at one time and then once it kind of became clear who we were going to play, then we started watching UCF film.”

A bit more on the recruiting circuit, with Bill Self already having a top 5 class for 2026 that could go higher if Tyran Stokes ever makes a decision.

“Kinney plays the most important position on the floor with confidence and skill. He is the catalyst of this class.”

Was the game against KU Hurley’s last home game as head coach at ASU?

The school did not offer a contract extension, so Hurley proceeded this season as a lame-duck coach. That’s never a good place to be. It’s hard to recruit in that scenario. Players want to know that the coach who brought them in will be there long-term. Upgrade the coaching staff? Forget it.

Not surprisingly, his high-profile players bolted for better-paying programs.

It’s unlikely to be as wild as football’s coaching carousel this past season but there are some things happening that are worth watching. CBS Sports has their handy tracker going to keep everyone up to date.

We’re in the first week of March, and there are already double-digit college basketball coaching jobs guaranteed to change. Eleven schools are involved in the 2026 carousel. In a week’s time, that number may well double, with the expected flips popping at the mid-major level.

Kaiya Wynn is leaving the Lady Vols after feeling snubbed on Senior Night:

“As someone who has never started a career game, l was hoping to start in my last appearance in Thompson-Boling. That obviously did not happen, and to be asked to check into the game with 15 seconds left while losing was not how I wanted to spend my final moments in my arena after five years. Although that was not the sole reason, it was the breaking point for me. I have the utmost love and respect for my teammates and this program and wish everyone nothing but the best.”

It looks like the Kyler Murray era in Arizona will come to an end next week.

After months of speculation about Murray’s future with the team, Arizona informed the 2019 No. 1 draft pick that it plans to release him next Wednesday, when the new league year begins, barring a trade, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday.

The headline says “5 everyday items that will become more expensive” as the Iran war continues. Seriously, look at the list and it’s basically “well, everything”.

For my Defector link of the week, we’ll go with Ray Ratto writing about Pat Riley complaining about NBA coaches and how they’re dressing these days.

Which brings us, in a much scaled-down version, to the issue of NBA coaches’ dress codes. Yes, this is a massive comedown from a war nobody asked for or bothered to justify, and even from the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight nobody asked for or should want to watch. But it’s good enough for The Athletic, and its recurring series Peak, about the mental side of sports. Rustin Dodd elbowed through 1,100 words about Hall of Fame coach, menswear icon, and Miami Heat uber-executive Pat Riley urging a return to coaches wearing suits and ties on the sidelines—yes, even when New Orleans is playing Sacramento Thursday night. Maybe especially then. For Riley, it’s a matter of principle.

QOTD: Last night sucked for the most part. The news is pretty terrible right now. David had a feel good question yesterday, so I’m basically out of ideas here. So dear readers, what makes a good “Question of the day”?
