San Jose Sharks forward Kiefer Sherwood has agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $5.75 million annually against the salary cap, a league source told ESPN.
Sherwood, 30, was acquired by the Sharks from the Vancouver Canucks in January for two second-round draft picks and minor league defenseman Cole Clayton.
A tenacious player with a scoring touch, Sherwood has 18 goals this season — one away from tying his career best. Overall, he has 25 points in 49 games this season but has played just five of them with the Sharks. His season was interrupted by an upper-body injury that prevented his Sharks debut until Feb. 4.
Sherwood was in the final year of a two-year contract he signed in July 2024 with the Canucks that carried a $1.5 million cap hit. There was speculation that the Sharks might flip Sherwood to another team before Friday’s trade deadline if they couldn’t find common ground on an extension.
It’s been quite a journey for Sherwood, a late bloomer in the NHL. Four seasons ago, he was primarily a minor leaguer in the Nashville Predators organization. Now, he’s inked a $29.5 million contract to help San Jose continue on its path to becoming a contender in the Western Conference.
The Macklin Celebrini-led Sharks (30-25-4) are three points out of the final wild card spot in the West entering Wednesday night.
