The Oklahoma Sooners began a busy Saturday in the 2027 recruiting class by landing a commitment from their preferred quarterback in the class, Saraland High School’s Jamison Roberts. The Mobile, Alabama product stands at 6-foot-3, weighs 190 pounds, and recently earned a fourth star in Rivals’ recruiting rankings.
Aside from being the latest example of Oklahoma offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Ben Arbuckle finding an unheralded recruit early on in the process and then watching him rise up the rankings, Roberts’ commitment gives the Sooners a QB to lead a very promising ’27 class.
Landing Roberts also gives the Sooners even more stability in the future of their quarterback room. Arbuckle and key assistant John Kuceyeski have spent the last 15 months completely rebuilding the position group, and they’ve got the QB room in a good place now. While Roberts won’t be on campus until next winter and still has a year of high school left, he will help to stabilize the future at quarterback in Norman.

Today we’ll take a look at what Oklahoma’s present and future QB situation looks like, following Roberts’ commitment. The Sooners return three players from last year’s room, and they add one player to the mix this year. The only quarterback Oklahoma lost this offseason was Michael Hawkins Jr., who transferred to West Virginia.
John Mateer (Redshirt Senior)
John Mateer was OU’s starter last year, and he returned for one more season at the college level in 2026. He was a superstar before his thumb injury last year, and his relationship with Arbuckle and Kuceyeski, combined with another year in the offense, and upgrades around him, should lead to another step forward this fall.

Whitt Newbauer (Redshirt Sophomore)
Whitt Newbauer got to OU last spring, and was the third-stringer last year. He played in three games and threw four passes. He provides both depth and a bit of starting experience, and he should battle for the backup job this offseason.
Jett Niu (Redshirt Freshman)
Jett Niu was Arbuckle’s first quarterback recruit at OU, and he played in one game last season. He has yet to attempt his first pass in a Sooner uniform, but he brings depth to the table, and he’ll work to get in on the backup QB derby behind Mateer during the offseason.
Bowe Bentley (True Freshman)
Bowe Bentley is the heir-apparent once Mateer’s final year is over, and he’s in line to take over the starting gig in 2027. Arbuckle loves what Bentley brings to the table, and he’ll likely end up as the QB2 this year. Bentley will spend this season learning the offense and learning from Mateer, and next season he’ll be the next player to step into the spotlight of being the quarterback at OU.

Jamison Roberts (class of 2027 commit)
The man of the hour committed to the Sooners on Saturday, and OU hopes to keep him in the boat until the Early Signing Period in December. Roberts is a dual-threat player who should continue to see his star rise during his senior season of high school with the Spartans. He’ll have to wait his turn to play at Oklahoma, since he’s only a year younger than Bentley, but Arbuckle thinks highly of Roberts, and fended off plenty of other high-profile programs to land him.
For the distant future, the Sooners have already offered class of 2028 QB Graham Simpson, the younger brother of former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. Oklahoma has not offered any quarterbacks in the 2029 or 2030 classes.
