Liverpool’s Alisson out of Galatasaray Champions League tie with training injury

by

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has not travelled to Istanbul for the Champions League round of 16 first leg against Galatasaray after sustaining a problem in training.

The Brazil international is understood to have felt some minor discomfort after the Monday morning session at the AXA Training Centre and a decision was taken not to risk taking him to Turkey.

Alisson has already missed nine matches this season through injury.

It means Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to make his first appearance since the FA Cup win over Barnsley two months ago, one of only 10 starts since arriving in the summer.

He has, however, featured in four of the eight Champions League matches to date, one of which was as a substitute for the injured Alisson in the 1-0 defeat away to Galatasaray in September.

The Georgia international has kept two clean sheets in his 10 starts, in back-to-back appearances against Real Madrid and Aston Villa in November when Alisson was still sidelined with a hamstring problem.

Liverpool’s only other notable absentee was forward Federico Chiesa, who was not present at training after being an unused substitute in Friday’s FA Cup win at Wolves.

Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister was forced off with a knee problem in that match but was able to train before flying out with the squad.
