Cutelaba (19-11-1 MMA, 8-10-1 UFC) enters his first fight of the year following a split decision loss to Modestas Bukauskas at UFC 315 last May. That was a frustrating outcome for Cutelaba, which stopped the momentum of back-to-back wins over Ivan Erslan and Ibo Aslan.

Two fights ago, Sy (12-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) suffered the first loss of his pro career in a decision loss against Alonzo Menifield. Just a few months later, he rebounded with a first-round statement finish of Brendon Ribeiro. It was a decision or first-round finish in his other two UFC results as well, as he stopped Tuco Tokkos in his debut and went the distance with Da Woon Jung.

Filling out the main card is a light heavyweight showdown between Oumar Sy and Ion Cutelaba.
Both fighters have been making small strides to improve their games, but this battle feels like it has two main outcomes: Either Sy can get this fight to the ground on his terms, or the French fighter will be forced to deal with Cutelaba’s pressure and aggression while standing.

Cutelaba has improved his pace management and shows greater willingness to grapple, but I don’t think that will serve him well here.
Say what you will about Sy’s shortcomings to Alonzo Menifield last year, I suspect that the Frenchman is making the proper gains by going down to South Florida to train at American Top Team. Couple that with the fact that this fight will be taking place in the smaller octagon, and I can’t help but side with the superior grappler in Sy.
