Major League Soccer has released details of its 2027 “sprint season,” the shortened campaign it will use to facilitate the league’s calendar shift.
The sprint season will see each team play a 14-game regular season from February to April, with eight teams from each conference advancing to the playoffs in May.

From there, the playoffs will proceed in a single-elimination bracket tournament that will conclude with the 2027 MLS Cup.
Since its inception in 1996, MLS has followed a spring-to-fall calendar but starting next year, the league will move to a fall-to-spring calendar that will align it with most of the world’s top leagues.

The 2026 campaign will operate as usual and will be followed by the sprint season, which will lead into the 2027-28 season that will kick off in July and end with the 2028 MLS Cup in May.
Though the sprint season will be truncated, it will be considered a fully valid MLS campaign, crowning a league champion and determining qualification for the 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup and 2028 Leagues Cup.

The 2027 sprint regular season will consist only of intra-conference play. Teams will face each of their 14 conference opponents once — seven matches at home and seven matches away.
