Most families don’t enter swimming through swim meets and competitions.

They enter through safety.

“Eighty percent of the families who walk through our doors are here because they don’t want their kids to drown,” says Tim Hall, co-founder of Silver Bear Swim Academy. “That’s the starting point.”

Swimming doesn’t begin at 10 & under. It begins with a child’s first confident, positive experience in the water.

In many communities, that “front door” has been inconsistent at best.

What happens after that is where swimming either grows — or disappears.

Founded by former Division I Cal swimmer Katie Hall and Three-Time Ironman Tim Hall, Silver Bear Swim Academy was built around a truth the competitive side of the sport sometimes overlooks:

Identifying the Gap

“I kept asking myself, what do I know best?” Katie says. “If there’s anything I know deeply, it’s swimming. I realized there was a gap in structured learn-to-swim programming.” That realization sharpened when she took her infant son to his first lesson. “This is where it begins,” Katie recalls thinking. “Teach them early. Make it safe. Make it fun. Build confidence first.” Silver Bear was built around structured progression… from infants through pre-team…designed to solve a problem many club coaches quietly acknowledge. “In a lot of communities, kids enter club at eight or nine years old and there are 40 kids to a lane,” Katie explains. “They’re overwhelmed. They don’t know all four strokes. It’s stressful.”

Silver Bear built a pre-team bridge to fix that.

“We prepare them properly,” she says. “They learn all four strokes. They understand workouts. They experience novice meets in a supportive way. When they transition to club, they’re confident instead of intimidated.”

In Reno, Silver Bear alumni now feed multiple club programs and have reached state championships — but that was never the primary objective. “Our core mission is water safety and confidence,” Tim says. “If they fall in love with the sport, that’s icing on the cake.”               Request the Silver Bear Overview

Nearly two decades ago, after moving to Reno, the Halls noticed something missing.

Programming Is the Difference

The Halls view their model as part of a larger solution to aquatics sustainability. “Just building a pool isn’t the answer,” Katie says. “It’s what’s going in the pool that makes it successful.”

Across the country, pools are aging. Municipal budgets are tightening. Staffing is increasingly difficult. Some high school programs have quietly disappeared when facilities became too costly to maintain.

Pools don’t survive on good intentions. They survive on programming.

Structured learn-to-swim programming creates consistent utilization and recurring revenue — two elements many facilities struggle to maintain. “If you have a pool with no programming, it’s a liability,” Katie says. “If you have strong programming skills, it becomes an asset.”

A Different Career Path Inside the Sport

For swimmers and coaches, another conversation emerges: What happens after competition ends?
“Coaching salaries are tough,” Tim says candidly. “There’s not a lot of long-term stability.”

Katie felt that tension firsthand. “In my corporate job, I could do great work. But it didn’t fill my bucket the way swimming did.”

Operating Silver Bear changed that. “You know the feeling of touching the wall first?” she says. “You get that same feeling when a parent sees their child swim independently for the first time.”

Silver Bear expands through a selective franchise model designed for active, community-embedded owners.

“It’s not just whether there’s room,” Tim says. “It’s whether there’s room for the right program.”

Swimming shaped a lot of lives. For some, the next chapter might not mean leaving the sport.
