NASCAR bringing back ‘Preseason Thunder’ at Daytona in 2027

NASCAR is bringing back a highly popular event before the 2027 Cup Series season. The “Preseason Thunder” test session at Daytona International Speedway is returning to NASCAR before the 2027 season, as reported by NASCAR’s John Probst on the Hauler Talk podcast.

The test session will return in January and assess the potential technical changes to the car that could lessen the impact of conservation strategies at superspeedway tracks. The NextGen car, combined with the stage cautions, has drastically impacted the product on superspeedway tracks since 2022.

Instead of the Cup Series drivers going all out, they save fuel to help give their pit crews a faster stop on pit road. Probst said the test session will come before the 2027 Rolex 24, which is scheduled for January 30 to 31st. NASCAR needs to make changes and the “Preseason Thunder” test session should help in 2027.
