Clint Capela discussed football crossover traits in basketball and selected his ideal NBA starting five of players who could handle themselves on a soccer pitch during an interview with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson. The conversation focused on athletic transfer, international competition, and player versatility across sports.
Capela highlighted speed, footwork, and collective play as key traits that translate between basketball and soccer. He noted that teamwork and movement patterns in both sports require similar timing and spatial awareness on the court and pitch.
The discussion also turned to international football, with Capela referencing the upcoming World Cup and his personal connection to both Switzerland and the Republic of Congo. He stated, “Both of my countries are qualifying in Switzerland and [Republic] of Congo which are my home countries. It doesn’t get better than this.”
When asked to build an NBA starting five capable of competing in soccer environments, Capela named Joel Embiid, Luka Doncic, Pascal Siakam, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Nikola Jokic.
Capela expanded on Jokic’s inclusion, focusing on consistency and decision-making across long stretches of elite play. He said, “Jokic. Because he sees everything and he can do everything and he’s so consistent every night. It’s not one game wows. It’s tomorrow night, two days, four days… 2 years, 4-5 to eight years. I mean, you have to appreciate that because it is hard to be at that level every night for that many years.”
The Houston Rockets center also reflected on changes in team environments across his NBA career. He noted differences in playing styles and group identity compared to earlier stages of his time in Houston, while pointing to evolving roster dynamics across seasons.
Capela added perspective on player development, mentioning his appreciation for growth he has observed in younger talent around the league. He referenced consistency and improvement trajectories when evaluating centers and forwards he follows during the regular season.
