The rich get richer as Satou Sabally leaves Phoenix for New York Liberty

Satou Sabally is headed to her third WNBA team in as many seasons.

After helping the Mercury reach the 2025 WNBA Finals in her first and only season in Phoenix, the versatile 6-foot-4 forward known as “The Unicorn” signed with the New York Liberty, ESPN reported. She will be reunited with Oregon teammate Sabrina Ionescu. The two helped lead the Ducks to a Final Four in 2019.

Sabally joined the Mercury in February 2025 in a four-team trade between Phoenix, the Dallas Wings, Connecticut Sun and Indiana Fever, forming a Big 3 with Alyssa Thomas and Kahleah Copper.

Sabally averaged 16.3 points and 5.9 rebounds per game in 39 games for Phoenix, while shooting 40.4% shooting from the field. She was named an All-Star for the second time in her career.

Our WNBA mock draft could be full of future stars

With the Women’s Final Four complete, all eyes turn towards the 2026 WNBA Draft. The WNBA draft takes place Monday, April 13, in New York, and this year’s event has a different feel. Unlike the last two drafts, where Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers were consensus No. 1 overall picks, this year’s top spot is up for grabs. After an exciting March Madness, it’s time to see who helped their stock and who fell down the draft board. Is Awa Fam still at the top? Is Azzi Fudd a top-five draft pick? Who vaulted into the first round?

Here’s USA TODAY’s latest 2026 WNBA mock draft: 1. Dallas Wings: Lauren Betts, C, UCLA
– After a stellar NCAA Tournament run, Betts has done enough to earn consideration for the No. 1 overall pick. While the Bruins center will need to work on shooting more baskets in the mid-range and later from deep, she can be inserted into Dallas’s lineup when the season starts on May 8. Her length and size make her an immediate threat in the post, along with her passing abilities and rebounding prowess.

She upped her game during the Mercury’s run to the WNBA Finals, averaging 19 points and seven rebounds in the playoffs. Sabally’s season was cut short after suffering a concussion in Game 3 of the WNBA Finals. She sat out Game 4 and the Aces went on to sweep the Mercury, 4-0, to win the title.

Before joining Phoenix, Sabally spent the first five years of her career in Dallas, where she was a two-time All-Star, first-team All-WNBA and won the WNBA Most Improved Player award in 2023. Sabally requested a trade from the Wings, telling reporters in January 2025, “I’m working with (the Wings) to find a next home for me. I’ve already played my last game in Dallas.”

The veteran forward emphasized she was looking for a franchise that prioritized women’s sports and resources. Sabally will get that with the Liberty, who Forbes has valued at $400 million − tops in the WNBA. In addition to Ionescu, she will play with All-Stars Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones.
