WNBA champion Kahleah Copper returns to Mercury on 2-year deal

Kahleah Copper is staying in the desert.

On Sunday, the Phoenix Mercury announced the veteran guard is returning to the franchise. ESPN reported that she re-signed on a two-year deal.

Copper, along with teammate Alyssa Thomas, who is also returning, led the Mercury to the WNBA Finals last season for the first time since 2021 under second-year head coach Nate Tibbetts.

“Kahleah is a true leader, on and off the court, one of the most explosive athletes in our game and competes with a relentless edge and toughness,” Mercury general manager Nick U’Ren said in a statement. “Her impact on both ends of the court and ability to deliver in the biggest moments make her truly special.”

Our WNBA mock draft could be full of future stars

With the Women’s Final Four complete, all eyes turn towards the 2026 WNBA Draft. The WNBA draft takes place Monday, April 13, in New York, and this year’s event has a different feel. Unlike the last two drafts, where Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers were consensus No. 1 overall picks, this year’s top spot is up for grabs. After an exciting March Madness, it’s time to see who helped their stock and who fell down the draft board. Is Awa Fam still at the top? Is Azzi Fudd a top-five draft pick? Who vaulted into the first round?

Here’s USA TODAY’s latest 2026 WNBA mock draft: 1. Dallas Wings: Lauren Betts, C, UCLA
– After a stellar NCAA Tournament run, Betts has done enough to earn consideration for the No. 1 overall pick. While the Bruins center will need to work on shooting more baskets in the mid-range and later from deep, she can be inserted into Dallas’s lineup when the season starts on May 8. Her length and size make her an immediate threat in the post, along with her passing abilities and rebounding prowess.

After a career year in Phoenix in 2024, Copper’s numbers slightly dipped in 2025 due to injuries. She was productive, averaging 15.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.1 steals in 28 games. Copper also recorded five games with at least four 3-pointers, one shy of her career best.

Copper was drafted out of Rutgers by the Washington Mystics with the seventh overall pick of the 2016 WNBA Draft. Copper spent one season in Washington before being traded to the Chicago Sky in 2017. She primarily played off the bench early in her career, but Copper was promoted to a full-time starter in 2020, where she increased her points per game from 6.7 in 2019 to 14.9 in 2020. Copper earned her first of four All-Star nods in 2021 and helped the Sky to a championship. She also won Finals MVP.
