Jamie Overton pumped his fist. Again and again. By the time he completed his fourth – and final – fist pump to signal the dismissal of Tristan Stubbs on Saturday, he had over 32,000 fans at Chepauk cheering for him and celebrating wildly. A group of fans behind the straight boundary even sang: “Belated Happy Birthday, Ooooooverton!”
A day after his 32nd birthday, Overton emerged as the new Chennai Super Kings (CSK) hero and gave the fans that old winning feeling at Chepauk.
Saturday’s win broke a sequence of six successive home defeats, stretching back to IPL 2025. Overton’s hard lengths and high pace – he cranked it up to 145kph – broke Delhi Capitals’ middle order and provided CSK’s attack with a potent point of difference. He came away with figures of 4-0-18-4 on a fairly flat pitch where 212 met 189.
Overton’s hit-the-deck hustle could be just as valuable – if not more – on Tuesday against a Kolkata Knight Riders middle order that hasn’t fared too well against the short-of-a-good-length ball. According to ESPNcricinfo’s logs, Rinku Singh has had a strike rate of only 138.86 against this type of length in T20 cricket since 2020. Rovman Powell’s strike rate against this length during this period is even poorer at 125.58.
While it was Stubbs’ dismissal that caused Chepauk to erupt during the weekend, it was David Miller’s that best exemplified Overton’s skills. Overton used every bit of his hulking 6’5″ frame, pounded the ball on a hard length, and got it to duck back in against the angle from over the wicket and ping the top of leg stump. Miller had shaped to back away and manufacture swinging room, but the awkward length and inward movement cramped him. But more than anything else, Miller was beaten for pace.
The speed gun clocked it at 145.2 kph. The ball rushed past Miller even before he could bring his bat down. When Miller turned back to survey the damage to his stumps, he wore a bewildered look, which might turn into something of a meme.
It was a remarkable turnaround in a matter of six days. On April 5, it was Overton who was the subject of memes after he repeatedly missed the yorker from around the wicket to Tim David and ended up conceding four sixes in a 30-run penultimate over at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
On a bouncier, red-soil surface in Chepauk, the plan was different and Overton executed it to near-perfection. Only one of the 24 balls that Overton bowled was fuller than a good length, according to ESPNcricinfo’s logs. Sixteen balls were either short or short of a good length.
“He tried something last week which didn’t work [during] the RCB game, but he really went with his strengths and went with the hard lengths [against DC],” Eric Simons, CSK’s bowling coach, said of Overton. “He’s always had a good yorker and you’ll find if you look at the way he’s gone back in the past he’s had some really good games. He’s worked on an off-pace delivery, which, when you’re bowling 150kph and you’ve got an off-pace delivery that’s under 120kph then it’s really effective. So he’s done some work on that as well.
“The more questions we can have in the batsman’s mind when they face the ball the better. If you see in someone like Lungi Ngidi, he’s got that off-pace ball and the batsman are looking for it, so we’re trying to make sure we have as many questions as they possibly can. But [Overton] stuck to his strengths today, the hard length and then the yorkers when he needed to. The lines are very important, the ball that you bowl to David Miller is a ball we speak about a lot.”
Overton has never been short of admirers – he is quicker than his twin brother Craig and can give the ball a good whack in the lower-middle order. He once felled Craig and Josh Davey in the same innings in a county game. He has traits that pique the interest of franchises in the T20 market.
He headed to the Abu Dhabi T10 league in 2021 and topped the wickets charts. He then lit up the Big Bash League, where Adelaide Strikers picked him more for his batting than his bowling. In the 2024-25 BBL, he was the MVP of the tournament for his 191 runs in nine innings at an average of 95.50 and strike rate of 156.55 to go with 11 wickets with the ball. Overton has also showcased his big-hitting in the Hundred for Manchester Originals, which had his team-mates referring to him as “Dre Russ” in jest, and now in this IPL for CSK.
Only time will tell if these comparisons acquire a more serious tone, but one thing is certain for now: Overton has captured the attention of the Chepauk faithful.
