For a stretch, Engelbert had a tension-filled relationship with the players as the WNBA and the WNBA Players Association went back and forth in the negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement.
But now that a new labor deal is in place, Engelbert was happy to welcome the new faces in the league, which will open its 30th season next month, avoiding a lockout.
During a media conference, Engelbert was asked how much longer she expects to remain as the commissioner. Engelbert, who has led the league since 2019, gave a sharp response.
“I wonder whether you would ask that of a man, by the way. But I realized as women we get asked different questions than men do,” said Engelbert.

“Look, I’m so proud of this league. I’m here working really hard to make our 30th season our best one ever and continue to build a sustainable economic model we need for the future.”
She also tipped her hat to the “thousands of amazing women” who continue to make the WNBA better, including general managers, owners, and other executives.
The WNBA is coming off a successful season, which saw unprecedented numbers in attendance and viewership, and Engelbert is positive about the league’s status moving forward.
“I’m thrilled with our trajectory, I’m thrilled with our growth, I’m thrilled with what we’ve done over the past couple of years, and I’m really looking forward to the next few years,” added Engelbert.
