The Memphis Grizzlies are likely to revisit trade conversations centered on star guard Ja Morant during the upcoming offseason, via Tim MacMahon and Michael C. Wright of ESPN.
League executives believe more teams could enter the mix this time around, though there’s skepticism that Memphis will receive a strong return in any potential deal.
Over the past year, the Grizzlies landed seven first-round picks in trades involving Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane, but rival teams don’t view Morant as bringing back a comparable package.
Ahead of the trade deadline, Memphis engaged with the Sacramento Kings, but discussions reportedly broke down after Sacramento asked the Grizzlies to attach additional assets to move Morant.
General manager Zach Kleiman remained cautious when addressing the situation, offering little detail while indicating internal alignment.
“Ja’s been a pro,” Kleiman said. “I think everyone is on the same page as much as we can be. I won’t speculate on any potential transactions.”
The clarity around Morant’s trade market may depend on how the draft and free agency unfold, as teams that miss out on their primary targets could shift focus.
Even so, there’s an expectation that interest will surface.
“There will be teams that will feel like they didn’t get what they wanted in the draft or free agency, and that’s when something could happen for Ja,” a Western Conference executive told ESPN.
