A new arena proposal in Las Vegas has entered the NBA expansion conversation as league officials continue evaluating potential new franchises in Las Vegas and Seattle, according to FOX5 reporting on Tuesday, April 21.
The project, named the Diamond Arena, is positioned for the south Las Vegas Strip near Mandalay Bay at the northeast corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Four Seasons Drive. The planned venue targets a 21,212-seat capacity and a direct entrance from the Strip.
The site is designed to sit within walking distance of more than 20,000 hotel rooms, placing it in one of the most tourism-dense areas in the United States.
The NBA Board of Governors already approved the formal expansion bidding process in March. League discussions have centered on two primary markets: Las Vegas and Seattle.
The Diamond Arena proposal is one of several competing bids under review, with expansion fees projected to potentially reach between $7 billion and $10 billion per franchise.
Developers are also highlighting transportation access as a key advantage. The site is positioned near I-15 and the 215 beltway, as well as Harry Reid International Airport.
Visibility is another core element of the proposal, with an estimated 60,000 passing vehicles daily in the surrounding corridor.
The planned infrastructure includes 18,460 existing parking spaces and an additional 760 VIP spaces, making it one of the most parking-heavy designs among competing sites.
The project blueprint also includes a 100,000-square-foot ground-level plaza and 140,000 square feet of team and broadcast facilities.
According to the FOX5 report, relocation discussions are already being considered for current tenants in the area, including radio operations at 97.5 FM. Some relocation arrangements have reportedly been discussed in advance.
NBA expansion remains in the exploratory phase. The league has not awarded franchises yet, and no official ownership group for Las Vegas has been confirmed.
The broader expansion process would require approval from at least 23 of 30 NBA governors before any new teams are added.
Las Vegas has increased its basketball footprint in recent years through NBA Summer League hosting duties and rising interest from ownership groups tied to existing arena projects.
Seattle remains another leading candidate due to its historical NBA presence and the former Seattle SuperSonics franchise, which relocated in 2008.
If expansion is approved, the league would grow to 32 teams, impacting scheduling structure, conference balance, and future talent distribution mechanisms such as an expansion draft.
Commissioner Adam Silver has previously stated that the league is evaluating both markets carefully, with emphasis on long-term sustainability and arena readiness.
The Diamond Arena proposal now joins a growing list of venue concepts shaping the NBA’s next phase of global and domestic growth strategy.
