As New York Liberty fans were worried about not retaining Jonquel Jones, the center is officially staying with the team as both sides agreed to a new contract this month. With the Liberty star back on a multi-year contract, Jones would speak about how she’s feeling coming into the 2026 season, as she dealt with injuries last year.

Coming off a minor ankle surgery in October of 2025, following injuries last season, she is back to being a full participant for New York, looking to keep up her production. She would even say on Friday that she has “no complaints” with anything and looks to continue to be the team’s “connector,” via Geoff Magliocchetti.
“I feel great. My ankle feels good, so no complaints. I’m just excited to be back out there to have a fully healthy season. Last year was kind of like uncharted territory for me, because I’m never really hurt, so it was just like a new challenge and something different,” Jones said.
“I had to kind of have a different perspective with everything. But just be the leader that I’ve always been, leading by example, I consider myself to be kind of like the connector on our team, just like making sure I’m checking on people, making sure I’m bringing everybody along. And I just want to continue that leadership style,” Jones continued.
Liberty’s Jonquel Jones on being a “full go”
This shouldn’t be too surprising to hear from Jones, as she said during training camp that she was a “full go” during the training and how “excited for the season” she is, according to The New York Post. The goal for the Liberty is one that the team last did in 2024, and it’s to win a title.

“Obviously another championship. That’s the big thing,” Jones said Monday. “I think we have a team that we’ve put together and people that are coming back from last year, too, where we can compete at a high level, and so we’re still going after that.”
Jones, Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and others look to continue the winning ways this season.
