Angelina Köhler Scares German Record in 50 Butterfly; Sven Schwarz Looks Sharp in 1500 Freestyle
Angelina Köhler wasn’t far off her national record while winning the 50-meter butterfly on Sunday at the German Championships. Köhler sprinted her lap of fly in 25.61, which handed the veteran a convincing victory over runnerup Maya Tobehn (26.67). Köhler owns the German record at 25.50, a time she posted for the fourth-place finish at last summer’s World Championships in Singapore.
Köhler’s victory was her third of the German Champs, complementing earlier wins in the 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle. She is expected to be a medal contender in multiple events at this summer’s European Championships in Paris. She was joined as a titlist in the 50 fly by Luca Armbruster, who prevailed in the men’s version of the event with a time of 23.13. Armbruster was followed in second place by Maurice Grabowski and Victor Sanin, who touched in matching swims of 23.56.
Distance standouts Sven Schwarz and Isabel Gose checked in with triumphs in the 1500 freestyle and 800 freestyle, respectively. Schwarz, already the winner of the 800 freestyle at the meet, added the 30-lap crown to his collection with a performance of 14:42.32. As for Gose, who previously won the 200 free, 400 free and 1500 free, she covered the 800 distance in 8:24.18.
Anna Elendt completed a sweep of the women’s breaststroke events by topping the field in the 200 distance. Elendt was timed in 2:24.77, which was well ahead of the 2:27.27 of Lena Ludwig. On the men’s side, Lucas Matzerath turned in a swim of 2:10.64. Victories in the 200 backstroke races were secured by Cornelius Jahn (1:56.63) and Mira Helget (2:12.86).
