Texas Tech transfer quarterback addition Brendan Sorsby is taking a medical leave of absence from the football program, the school announced on Monday.
Sorsby will enter a residential treatment center for gambling addiction. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the decision came amid an NCAA investigation into Sorsby allegedly placing “thousands” of online bets, including on Indiana games when he was a member of the Hoosiers’ football program in 2022.

Per Thamel, Sorsby’s IU bets were all on his team to win, and none of them were placed on games in which he played. The betting activity is reportedly not being looked into by law enforcement, but NCAA rules forbid athletes from betting on any sports, professional or college.
Here is Texas Tech’s full statement on Sorsby’s leave of absence.
The Texas Tech Athletics Department and Brendan Sorsby announced today that Sorsby will take an immediate indefinite leave of absence from the football program to enter a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction.
Texas Tech is committed to supporting Brendan through his recovery process and to ensure his long-term health and well-being.
“We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,” Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said. “Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”
Texas Tech’s primary focus remains on fostering an environment where student-athletes feel empowered to prioritize their mental health and seek professional assistance.
To protect the integrity of the recovery process, Texas Tech will have no further comment on Brendan’s status or treatment progress at this time. We kindly ask the media and the public to respect the privacy of Brendan and his family.
Sorsby was one of the most coveted quarterbacks in the transfer portal this offseason after starting 30 games over the last three seasons at both Indiana and Cincinnati. With the Bearcats last season, he threw for 2,800 yards with 27 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also added 580 yards on the ground with nine rushing touchdowns.
He was reportedly in line to make north of $5 million this season, but his future eligibility at Texas Tech is now called into question.

Behind Sorsby, the Red Raiders‘ quarterback room is largely an unknown. Lloyd Jones III, who redshirted last season, has been competing with former Tulsa backup Kirk Francis for the No. 2 job. Will Hammond, who backed up Behren Morton last year, is also in the mix but is likely to miss the beginning of the season as he recovers from a torn ACL late in the 2025 season.
