Jamal Cain on Magic’s 3-1 lead: “Job not finished, man”

Jamal Cain gave the Orlando Magic the kind of playoff lift that rarely shows up in a box score alone, then made sure nobody in the locker room mistook a 3-1 lead for a finished series.

“This team prides itself on the defensive end,” Cain said after Orlando’s 94-88 win over the Detroit Pistons on Monday night at Kia Center. “We knew Detroit was going to come out with a lot of attention on trying to play faster and play more physical. I think we responded well to it.”

The Magic held Detroit to 88 points, turned the game into a half-court fight and took a 3-1 lead with Game 5 set for Wednesday in Detroit. Cain said the group stayed composed when the Pistons tried to shift the tempo.

“I think we came in with the right mindset,” he said. “We were poised. We were resilient and we made some huge plays down the stretch to win the game.”

Cain delivered one of those plays himself with a driving dunk over Jalen Duren and later added a tip-in that helped Orlando survive a tight fourth quarter. He said the finish was never the main point.

“Just make the dunk,” Cain said. “But my whole job tonight was to try and make Cade’s life difficult.”

That assignment mattered against Cade Cunningham, who still scored 25 points but was forced into eight turnovers. Cain said the approach was simple and physical.

“I mean it’s Cade, he’s a phenomenal player,” he said. “He’s going to make tough ones. He’s going to get me on a couple moves, but as long as I stay aggressive, stay in his body, I’m just trying to make his life difficult.”

Cain’s energy also showed up on the glass, where he kept creating second chances in a playoff game built on possession value.

“Because I keep going,” he said. “If you keep going, eventually one of them is going to bounce your way. And I believe that wholeheartedly. So, I’m going to keep crashing.”

He added nine rebounds and helped stabilize the game after Franz Wagner exited with calf soreness. Cain said that kind of role still means everything to him, even after his contract conversion.

“It means a lot, but I still feel like I have a lot to work on,” he said. “I really haven’t done anything.”

Still, the confidence from teammates has clearly mattered.

“They’ve been nothing but the best in terms of giving me confidence and making sure I’m ready for this moment,” Cain said. “I give all the credit to my teammates honestly because they believe in me and they give me the energy and the mindset to go out and play free and make plays.”

Even with Orlando one win away from the next round, Cain made the mindset plain.

“Job not finished, man,” he said. “There’s nothing to be happy about.”
