Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks had a good run last season. They were one of the most dominant teams from the beginning, with several players performing at the highest level consistently.
That dominance took them all the way to the national championship game, where they suffered a blowout loss against the UCLA Bruins. But the loss in the final game wasn’t the most discussed thing about South Carolina’s season.

The Gamecocks played the UConn Huskies in the Final Four round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament. They were up against arguably the strongest team in the country, and pressure was at an all-time high.
The Huskies were unbeaten in the entire season when they went into the Final Four matchup against the Gamecocks. Staley’s team handed the Huskies their first loss, ending their title run with a dominant 62-48 win.
When the game ended, Dawn Staley and UConn’s head coach Geno Auriemma got into a heated confrontation. Things got so heated between Staley and Auriemma that players, staff, and refs had to step in to separate them.
Auriemma was heavily criticized for his behavior. During a recent appearance on the Joe and Jada podcast, Sheryl Swoopes commented on the matter, criticizing Auriemma.

“As a Black person, in particular, a Black woman, we’re always expected to take the higher road,” Swoopes said. “Like, when do we say enough is enough?”
Swoopes said that even if Staley didn’t shake Auriemma’s hands, which led to the confrontation, that wasn’t a good enough reason to ruin a special moment for Staley and her team. Swoopes believes that the final few minutes of the Final Four matchup put a stain on Auriemma’s legendary coaching career.
Geno Auriemma Apologized to Dawn Staley
There was no excuse for how Auriemma acted at the end of the game. The heated confrontation took the limelight away from the South Carolina Gamecocks, who had worked really hard to make it to the title game.

Auriemma also realized that he had made a mistake and issued an apology. In his statement, he revealed that he had a conversation with Staley and realized that he was wrong.
“This morning, Dawn Staley and I spoke about our interaction after the game last Friday,” Auriemma stated. “I apologized to Dawn, her staff and her team. I’ve lost more games in the Final Four than any coach in history. But Friday I lost something more important. I lost myself.”
Auriemma said that Staley’s team played better and they deserved to win. More importantly, they deserved better from him.
