NBA strategists have begun referencing a potential trade framework involving Joel Embiid and Domantas Sabonis, according to league reporting that points to an unlikely but discussed scenario.
NBA insider Jake Fischer reported on The Stein Line: “One longshot scenario that does get mentioned by rival team strategists is an Embiid-for-Domantas Sabonis swap with Sacramento … but even longshot might be underselling it. Both former All-Star big men could probably use a fresh start, but there’s just no getting around the fact that Embiid, at 32, seems incapable of holding up for a deep playoff run. Which certainly shortens the list of potential suitors.”
Embiid is set to enter the first year of a three-year, $188 million extension that includes a player option in the final season. Sabonis is set to begin the third year of a four-year, $186 million contract, placing both players on significant long-term salary commitments.
The 76ers structured around Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George finished the 2025-26 regular season at 45–37, ranking seventh in the Eastern Conference. The group advanced through the playoffs to the conference semifinals before facing a sweep against the New York Knicks.
The Kings ended the regular season 22–60, placing 14th in the Western Conference and missing the postseason. Sabonis anchored the frontcourt alongside Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Russell Westbrook, with the team cycling through multiple rotation combinations across the year.
Statistically, Sabonis produced 15.8 points and 11.4 rebounds in 19 games, while Embiid averaged 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds in 38 appearances. The difference in availability and usage has remained a central factor in league evaluations of both centers.
Sacramento also holds a projected lottery position at No. 7 in the 2026 NBA Draft, scheduled for June 23–24 at Barclays Center. The Washington Wizards own the No. 1 selection in a draft class led by prospects such as AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, and Cameron Boozer.
Any potential framework involving Embiid and Sabonis would require alignment on health outlook, contract structure, and roster direction for both franchises. League strategists continue to frame the idea as highly unlikely, while still noting its presence in early offseason discussions.
