Michigan State football has lost an in-state recruiting battle with their top rival from down the road.
Lundon Hampton of Grand Rapids, Mich. announced his commitment to the Michigan Wolverines on Thursday. Hampton was initially considered a lean towards the Spartans shortly after new head coach Pat Fitzgerald took over at Michigan State, but his recruitment clearly flipped towards the Wolverines since then.

Hampton is listed as a three-star athlete, with a recruiting rating of 86 in 247Sports’ system. He ranks as the No. 96 athlete and No. 22 prospect in the state of Michigan for the 2027 class, according to 247Sports.
Michigan State was scheduled to host Hampton for an official visit in late June, but I’m assuming that is no longer on the table following his commitment to the Wolverines. Outside of offers from Michigan and Michigan State, Hampton also held notable offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, California, Iowa, Louisville, Kansas, Kentucky, Penn State, Pitt and Purdue.
It’s never good to see your rival beat you out for a prospect, especially an in-state kid that was once considered a lock to be a Spartan. But if you go off the recruiting ratings and rankings, this isn’t a back-breaking loss in the recruiting world. Still, this is a tough one for Michigan State and hopefully they can respond with some more success on the recruiting trail as we hit official visit season next week.
