LeBron James has outlined a clear condition for his next NBA chapter as he approaches free agency following the 2025-26 season. The veteran forward emphasized that winning and roster continuity remain central factors in any decision about where he plays next.
Speaking on the Mind the Game podcast, the 41-year-old addressed the type of environment he would consider for a potential 24th season in the league. His comments focused on competitiveness, structure, and avoiding a rebuild situation.
“Because you want to be excited about going to work everyday. You want to be excited about, you know, like I said earlier, winning the day. And being around a group of guys that, you know, feel the same way and trying not to take steps backwards. You know, understand a season is a long marathon and whatever the case may be. But those building blocks throughout the course of the season is what matters to when you get to the sprint, which is now, you know, the postseason. So, yeah I’m not going anywhere it’s a start over at year 24 or things of that nature.”
The statement comes as James is set to enter unrestricted free agency this summer after completing his two-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Los Angeles finished the 2025-26 regular season with a 53–29 record in the Western Conference, securing the No. 4 seed behind strong campaigns from Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Doncic led the team at 33.5 points and 8.3 assists per game, while Reaves added 23.3 points per night as a secondary creator.
James produced 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists across 60 regular-season games at age 41, maintaining a high-level playmaking role within a ball-dominant offensive structure. In the playoffs, he increased his production to 23.2 points, 7.3 assists, and 6.7 rebounds over 10 games.
The Lakers advanced to the Western Conference semifinals before being swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder, highlighting the gap between roster stability and championship-level execution. That postseason outcome frames the context of James’ comments about avoiding situations that require long-term rebuilding.
