Chargers’ Omarion Hampton could have breakout 2026 season

by

Los Angeles Chargers running back Omarion Hampton is entering his second season in the league with high expectations after a disappointing rookie campaign that was highlighted by injuries.

Hampton, the No. 22 overall pick out of North Carolina, played in just nine games during the 2025 season due to an ankle injury, limiting him to 545 yards and four touchdowns. However, the addition of offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel could help Hampton reach his full potential.

“McDaniel’s approach will be interesting as he melds the Shanahan run-game principles with Jim Harbaugh’s preferred physical approach. The San Francisco 49ers have been very successful in making this shift in recent years. McDaniel has helped devise one for the game’s friendliest run games throughout his coaching career,” Bleacher Report contributor Brent Sobleski wrote.

“Last season, De’Von Achane finished among the top five in rushing yardage with McDaniel calling the plays. In fact, the coach deserved credit for shifting from his previous high-flying, vertical passing attack midseason and becoming a ground-and-pound offense that turned the Miami Dolphins into a competitive team over the last two months of the 2025 campaign.“

Health will be the biggest factor in whether or not Hampton succeeds in the upcoming season, but his new situation when it comes to the coaching staff will be the difference in whether he is good or the great player the Chargers thought he could be after making him a first-round draft pick.
