The Boston Celtics have long been out of the NBA Playoffs, but head coach Joe Mazzulla received his recognition for the team’s 56-26 regular-season record. Mazzula won the NBA’s Coach of the Year award, surpassing closing favorites JB Bickerstaff (Detroit Pistons) and Jordan Ott (Phoenix Suns) when the votes were tallied.

Mazzulla received 62 first-place votes to Bickerstaff’s 29, and he finished with 392 points.

Thank you to our players who compete and give it everything they have each night. I am grateful for every member of the Celtics organization whose dedication impacts winning every day. This award belongs to our staff, who are there for the guys every day. Their relentless work ethic improves our team daily. This award should be named Staff of the Year,” Mazzulla said in a release, according to Souichi Terada of Mass Live.

Understanding NBA Coach of the Year odds

Most sportsbooks will display odds in the American format as listed above. We’ll use 2022-23’s Coach of the Year race as an example:

As the season progressed, with Mike Brown having been a huge favorite, his odds had a minus (-) sign ahead of the number:

This means that a bettor needs to wager $500 to win $100. Other candidates with worse odds would have a plus (+) sign ahead of the number. Early in the season, before any clear favorite is established, betting options will be listed as such:

Here, a bettor stands to profit $650 for every $100 wagered.
