New York’s woes continued on Monday night when the visiting Portland Fire stormed back from a 10-point deficit to run away with an 81-74 victory. The Liberty got to within three at 74-71 on a pair of Breanna Stewart free throws with 29 seconds to go before the Fire put the game away. Sabrina Ionescu, who returned from a foot injury on Sunday, did not play. Stewart finished with 25 points for New York while Marine Johannes added 17 points and six assists, and Jonquel Jones put up 12 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocked shots.

The Mercury saw a nine-point lead disappear in less than 90 seconds in an 82-80 road loss to the Atlanta Dream on Sunday. Leading 73-64, Atlanta went on a 9-0 run to catch Phoenix with just more than a minute to go. Alyssa Thomas and Kahleah Copper scored 20 points apiece for the Mercury, with Thomas adding 12 rebounds and seven assists.
Ionescu and Liberty forward Satou Sabally (illness) are game-time decisions for Wednesday night, while Leonie Fiebich is scheduled to rest. Stewart averages 21.3 points and 9.0 rebounds for New York, with Jones getting 12.6 points per game. Copper scores an average of 18.7 points for Phoenix, with Thomas putting up 18.0 points and 8.0 assists per game and Natasha Mack grabbing 8.4 boards a night.
